New Vogue Patterns - October 2014

Posted by Susan Liane, The Smuggler's Daughter on 10/25/2014
The new patterns for Vogue have been out for a couple of weeks and I'm pretty sure that I know which ones I will sew and which ones I won't. What about you? Have you had a chance to look? There are some interesting necklines, a few fantastic choices from reliable sources, and a couple of great options in easy Vogue Patterns that aren't in the designer section.

Marcy Tilton has nailed it again with three terrific new patterns, destined to be bestsellers. The pullover top (V9057) has variations for the neckline and shaped hemline, offering wonderful opportunities for mixing and matching knits. Marcy's tops are always stylish and comfortable and this one is on top of my list of things to sew. I'm going to use a mix of lightweight knits like The Smuggler's Daughter's burnout black on gray dots

Not far behind is Marcy's new pull on skirt (V9060). This distinctive design is ideal for stretch wovens or stable knits like Ponte. I might use the Eileen Fisher Best Gray Ponte or the Rip Torn knit

Although I don't plan to sew this coat anytime soon, Vogue 9070 is Marcy's loose fitting, unlined coat that has great detail. It could sew up well into a raincoat or a wool coat for winter, and even something lighter.

Sandra Betzina, another reliable source of excellent pattern design, gives us Vogue 1430, a loose-fitting, draped front blouse with an extending collar, side slits and stitched hems. One of the photos of this blouse shows a border print and it looks fantastic. I do love a nice border print.

Surprisingly, I plan to sew a couple of the "easy" patterns without designer designation. I love Vogue 9064 and think it can be a nice alternative for office/career wear. Vogue 9067, a five easy pieces pattern, is a nice casual, loose-fitting outfit, that I think I will save for next spring.

About those interesting necklines - and they do look nice, but on someone else. It is always nice to see the pattern companies offer designs with a bit of flair, even if they won't look good on me. If one of these necklines is to your taste, I'd love to see it sewn up in one of our fabrics.
