Girls & Their Summer Clothes - Part 3

Posted by Susan Liane, The Smuggler's Daughter on 8/14/2014 to Sewing Projects

It is still warm here in Southern Oregon and the sun sits high in the August sky, so I figure that I have another couple of summer dresses in me. And I stumbled upon a darling border print that I just couldn't wait to use. The print is a seaside village scene with a sunny yellow sky on a cotton gauze.

I had always thought that Indygo Junction's Crossover Tunic Pattern would be ideal for a border print, and I had border prints on the brain ever since Carolyn from Diary of a Sewing Fanatic recently posted a blog about a creative use of a border print.

The pattern is fairly simple and doesn't need much explanation.  The only changes I made were to line the border print with an off-white gauze and I lengthened the skirt. I made the bodice reversible and added a simple lining to the skirt.

The dress turned out fine, but I don't think this style is the best for me for a couple of reasons.  First - my full bust makes a camisole a must and that is workable.  But second is my shoulder slope.  Even adjusting for this, the bodice still slips off my shoulders too easily.  I might add a couple of ties to the back, just so I don't have to fiddle with the shoulders.  The best solution would have been to substitute a high back for the crossover pieces in the pattern.

Do you love this print as much as I do?  Well, you are in luck, as The Smuggler's Daughter still has 2 yards left.  Sunshine By The Sea - Border Print (End Cut)
